The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia

Previously, individual state of Australia had their own Nursing and Midwifery Board. But from July 1st 2010 all the boards have joined together and became one Board called 'The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia' under 'The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency' - AHPRA.

From 1 July 2010 practitioners of the Nursing and Midwifery professions across Australia have to meet the same requirements for registration and it is recognized in all States and Territories. AHPRA is the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency from 1 July 2010. It is the organization that supports the national registration for 10 health professions from 1 July 2010.

Registration Requirements

The most important requirements are :

  • One should have successfully completed a nursing related study for at least 6 semesters as part of their post secondary education.
  • Should be a Registered Nurse in the home country OR the country where he / she is trained as a Nurse.
  • Evidence of English Proficiency ( A valid IELTS certificate with a minimum score of 7.0 in each segment is mandatory after 19 September , 2011).
  • Minimum 6 month s full time, post registration work experience as a registered nurse.
  • Good standing letter from the nursing council with which the applicant is currently registered as R.N.
  • Certificate issued by a relevant Government authority stating no adverse record during the last three years.

Enrolled / Division 2 Nursing ( Diploma of Nursing )

About the course :

Duration : 1.5 years
Eligibility : Minimum Senior secondary passed ( ANM / GNM / BSc Nurses can also apply)
IELTS : Not less than 6.0 over all and 5.5 in each segment.

Students will gain important clinical experience through placements. Supervised training and hands-on learning experiences will help them to build skill base and confidence.

Out come of the programme :
Those who successfully complete this course will be eligible for registration as a Division 2 / Enrolled Registered Nurse.

Further study :
Students can progress on to Bachelor of Nursing, direct entry to 2nd year or send semester of second year.

Careers opportunities :
Successful completion of this course will increase the employability of students in non-traditional areas such as emergency, maternal and child health and community nursing.


Bachelor of Nursing

Normal Duration : 3 years
Eligibility : Senior secondary passed
IELTS : Not less than 6 in each segment.
Fees : A$900.00 per semester

This course provides you with appropriate qualifications to gain Division 1 registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

The flexible clinical placement program also allows you to self-roster your placements across weekdays, weekends and night shifts. This is spread over an 18 week period.

Registered Nurses with a 3 years Diploma in Nursing may be directly accepted to the 2nd / 3rd year of Bachelor Degree.
