The pathways and options to become a registered nurse in New Zealand
There are many options and pathways for a foreign educated nurse to become a registered nurse in New Zealand.
(1) Opportunity to qualify for Direct Registration.
Foreign educated Nurses who are holding a Bachelor of Nursing Degree and currently registered in their home
country as Registered Nurses, with post registration clinical experience of 6 months and above, and able to prove
their English proficiency through any one of the acceptable test results (IELTS with 7 in all 4 segments / OET with B
grade in all 4 segments) can apply for registration, directly.
They may have to do the CAP programme of 7-8 weeks before they are finally accepted for registration.
Since CAP - Competency Assessment Programme - is a short duration course, students and institutions find it very
difficult to convince the concerned government authorities for a visa approval, or and to complete the registration
formalities within the stipulated time given in the visa.
Therefore students are advised to take a 6 -12 months Bachelor or Post graduate programme and do the CAP
simultaneously or towards the end of the main programme.
Students of KCR Consultants will have the opportunity to be placed on a 1 year Bachelor / Post graduate
programme in an approved government or private institution where the CAP programme also is offered.
(2) - (a). English Studies for Nursing Registration for those with 6.5 in IELTS
BSc Nurses with work experience but with IELTS score of 6.5 have the pathway of a tailor made 6 months English
