Education is subsidized in Russia hence Universities are able to offer courses on a very low tuition fees to domestic and international students alike.

As far as international students who wish to study in English language in Russia are concerned, Medical and engineering are the two most popular study areas. A medicine student studying in English medium will complete the programme in 6 years including his / her internship.

The duration of study will be 7 years in case an international student prefers to study in Russian language. One year preparatory study Russian language is required to be added for those who are not good in Russian language and still wish to study in the Russian medium.

Home to around 30,000 students, PFUR is currently No. 4 of Russia’s more than1,100 universities. Founded in 1960, it was renamed Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia in 1992. Withmore than 12,000 students enrolled, PFUR employs over 1,600 professors and instructors, including over 200 doctors of science and some 800 candidates of science (Ph.D.s) and more than 60 academicians. At PFUR, one can get a degree in one’s chosen area of expertise as well as in one or two foreign languages and, possibly, a second area of expertise.

All PFUR students (foreign and Russian) get degrees in translation from one (if not two or three) foreign languages. A truly multi-cultural institution, it has hosted students from 158 countries. 	VLADIMIR FILIPPOV Rector of PFUR (1993-1998 and since 2005) and an academician of the Russian Academy of Education. Born in 1951, he was Russian Minister of Education from 1998 to 2004. An expert in differential equations and functional analysis, he has modernised education in Russia by deploying the Western model. He is the author of more than 120 published scholarly articles.

1. Russian State Medical University (RSMU)

Russian State Medical University (RSMU) is a State University founded in 1906 in Moscow, offering Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in various streams. International students have the option to choose the medium of instructions in Russian or in English languages.

Structurally the University includes 4 scientific research institutes, among which the Institute of Gerontology included in 2008 according to the decision of the Government of the Russian Federation; 24 programs and self-supporting laboratories as parts of 6 scientific departments; 8 educational faculties and the Faculty of Advanced Training of Doctors with the total of 140 departments. fifty of these departments take part in the training of English speaking foreign students.

The University has its bases in 38 largest city hospitals, some dispensaries and maternity homes, among which is the Republican Children’s Clinical Hospital equipped with the modern medical facilities and a computer centre. In these hospitals the future doctors have their clinical practice under the supervision of experienced teachers.

2. Stavropol State Medical Academy (StSMA)

Stavropol State Medical Academy is also a state University of Russia situated at Stavropol city which offer medicine programmes in English Language. It was founded in 1938. Foreign experts are preparing here in General Medicine and Dentistry specialties.

The Academy has a library, which numbers about 500 000 copies of books and periodicals. It has also its own editions, the Academy newspaper «Medicus» and a scientific practice magazine «Medical Bulletin of North Caucasus».

Persons having the higher medical education are eligible to study in the Post-Diploma Training Course (Clinical Internship – 1 year, Residency – 2 years or more; Postgraduate Course – 3-4 years; Doctoranture – 5 years.)

The persons with the higher medical education and who have completed the specialities at the Post-Diploma education level (Clinical Internship, Residency) are admitted to the cycles of professional retraining and improvement of professional skills.

3. Kazan State Medical University
