For several years Waikato Institute of Education (WIE) has been one of New Zealand's leading English language schools providing English Courses in New Zealand. WIE is a New Zealand Government Approved Academic Institution, and registered with the NZ Ministry of Education. All WIE programmes are accredited by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Waikato Institute of Education (WIE) is the only authorized training and testing centres for TOEIC in Waikato, New Zealand.

New Zealand Government Support for Waikato Institute of Education

In recognition of being a provider of quality English language courses and programmes, WIE receive government funding for its new migrant students through the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC). Several new initiatives in the provision of ESOL to WIE’s NZ permanent resident students are supported through various government funded areas eg. ESOL Literacy & Numeracy programme, General English for New Migrants, etc.

WIE is an active member of Waikato Education International (WEI) a regional subsidiary organization of Education New Zealand (ENZ). ENZ is recognized by the New Zealand Government as the umbrella industry body for education exporters in New Zealand, and is committed to the export of New Zealand’s education services offshore.


COURSES OFFERED


1. ENGLISH STUDIES FOR NURSING REGISTRATION (ESNR)

WIEs English Studies for Nursing Registration (ESNR) programme prepares overseasqualified, registered nurses to become a Registered Nurse in New Zealand. The goals of the programme are:

  • To raise the level of the overseas-registered nurses standard of English to that required for nursing registration
  • To prepare overseas-registered nurses for study in a New Zealand Institute of Technology or Polytechnics nursing programmes
  • To assist overseas nurses to communicate more effectively in a NZ healthcare environment
  • To assist overseas nurses to adapt to the expectations and culture of NZ nursing curriculum and workplace.

The ESNR programme was specially designed to assist overseas qualified nurses to achieve an IELTS score of at least 7.0 OR at least a ’B’ pass in OET for all four skill areas of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

The programme itself consists of two components:

a) Intensive English Study - IELTS Preparation OR OET Preparation (26 weeks): This component of the programme consists of two options. Option A is the Intensive IELTS Preparation course and Option B is the Intensive OET Preparation course. Learners can choose the option they would like to study based on the test they intend to take.

b) Working in NZ Seminars and Workshops: The second component of the programme is designed to introduce nurses to New Zealand health industry, living in New Zealand and workplace culture. Nurses would also be taught how to write a CV, search for jobs, apply for jobs and attend an interview. After completing this course, nurses will be assisted by WIEs job recruitment partners to obtain part-time work* of up to 20 hours per week.

The entry requirements for this programme are:

1) A complete 4 year B.Sc. Nursing degree
2) Current practicing certificate
3) Registration as a nurse in own country
4) Employed as a registered nurse in a practice setting in the last five years.
5) IELTS (Academic Test) score of 6.0 across all bands.


2. PRE-ENGLISH STUDIES FOR NURSING REGISTRATION (PRE-ESNR)

This programme is designed for qualified nurses that do not fulfill the IELTS 6.0 requirement for the ESNR programme. Upon completion of the Pre-ESNR programme, learners will be promoted to the ESNR programme. Nurses who have completed the Working in NZ Seminars and Workshops will be assisted by WIEs job recruitment partners to obtain part-time work* of up to 20 hours. The entry requirements for this programme are:

1) A complete 4 year B.Sc. Nursing degree
2) Current practicing certificate
3) Registration as a nurse in own country
4) Employed as a registered nurse in a practice setting in the last five years.
5) IELTS (Academic Test) score of 5.0 across all bands.

The length of study in the Pre-ESNR is based on the learners English level.

All learners enrolled in the Pre-ESNR and ESNR programmes will be provided with a FREE User Licence to access either the Computer-based IELTS Preparation course OR the Computerbased English for Health course for the duration of their study.

The Computer-based IELTS Preparation and English for Health courses are offered exclusively to WIEs nursing students in addition to classroom-based learning. With this computer-based study system, learners can study at their own pace to either speed up their learning or improve their current level.



3. STUDY PATHWAYS TO BECOME A REGISTERED NURSE IN NEW ZEALAND

There are three pathways to qualify as a Registered Nurse in New Zealand, which applies to the following category of applicants:

1) Applicants without a nursing qualification
2) Applicants with an overseas Diploma in Nursing and registered as a nurse in their own country
3) Applicants with an overseas 4 year B.Sc. in Nursing and registered as a nurse in their own country

For the first category of applicants, applicants would need to complete a Bachelor of Nursing (3 years) before applying to Nursing Council of New Zealand (NCNZ) for registration. The second category of applicants would need to complete the Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses (1 year) before applying to NCNZ for registration. The third category of applicants would need to enrol on WIEs ESNR programme to fulfill the IELTS requirement.

For Bachelor of Nursing, the IELTS requirement is 6.5 across all bands and for Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses, it is 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. For WIEs ESNR programme, applicants need to have at least 6.0 in all bands.

All three categories of applicants would need to have an IELTS score of 7.0 across all bands for registration with the NCNZ.

Entry requirements for the two degrees and WIEs ESNR programme are as follows:

Bachelor of Nursing (3 years)

Entry requirements
1. All applicants must meet the general admission criteria as approved by the Academic Board of the enrolling institute.
2. IELTS (Academic Test) score of 6.5 across all bands.
3. Declare any previous criminal convictions prior to admission being confirmed.
4. Authorise the enrolling institute to request for a criminal record report from the relevant authority.
5. Provide certified copies of all relevant documentation, and 6. Any other additional information requested by the enrolling institute.

Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses (1 year)

Entry requirements
1. Registration as a nurse in own country.
2. Current practicing certificate.
3. At least one year of employment as a registered nurse in a practice setting in the last five years.
4. IELTS (Academic Test) score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0.
5. Any other additional information requested by the enrolling institute.

WIEs English Studies for Nursing Registration (ESNR)

Entry requirements
1. A complete 4 year B.Sc. Nursing degree.
2. Current practicing certificate.
3. Registration as a nurse in own country.
4. Employed as a registered nurse in a practice setting in the last five years.
5. IELTS (Academic Test) score of 6.0 across all bands.

An applicant from any of the first two categories intending to gain a NZ Nursing Registration would need to do the following:

1. Applicant enrolls in a Bachelor of Nursing (3 years) or Bachelor of Nursing for Registered Nurses (1 year).
2. Completes the programme and gains a Bachelor of Nursing degree+.
3. Applies to NCNZ for registration (requires IELTS 7.0 across all bands).
4. NCNZ recommends applicant to undertake a Competency Assessment Programme (CAP) through a nursing school.
5. Applicant undertakes CAP.
6. On passing CAP, NCNZ awards New Zealand registration.

+Completion of a nursing degree does not enable the applicant to practice as a nurse in New Zealand.

An applicant from the third category intending to gain a NZ Nursing Registration would need to do the following:

1. Applicant enrolls in WIEs ESNR programme.
2. Completes the programme and sits for the IELTS test and obtains a score of at least 7.0 in all four Academic Test modules.
3. Applies to NCNZ for registration.
4. NCNZ recommends applicant to undertake a Competency Assessment Programme (CAP)* offered by an accredited service provider or jointly by an accredited service provider and school of nursing.
5. Applicant undertakes CAP. 6. On passing CAP, NCNZ awards New Zealand registration.

*Competence assessment programmes may be offered by an accredited health care service provider or jointly between an accredited health care service provider and a tertiary provider with a Council approved programme leading to registration as a nurse.



Competence Assessment Programme (CAP) (6 - 12 weeks)

This competency based integrated theory practice programme has been designed to meet the needs of Overseas Registered Nurses who are required to successfully complete a competency based programme in order to attain Nursing Council of New Zealand Registration.

The Registered Nurse will be updated across the scope of nursing practice and have the opportunity to revise his/her nursing knowledge in order to achieve prescribed Nursing Council of New Zealand Competencies.

Applicants from a country where English is not the first or native language must provide certification from an accepted language testing authority indicating that they have achieved the required standard of performance in the English language within the last two years. Accepted tests and related standards include:

(a) A minimum score of 7.0 in all four Academic Test modules of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Test,
or
(b) A minimum of B in all four sub-tests of the Occupational English Test (OET).

Upon successful registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand, the applicant would now be a fully qualified, registered nurse and can seek employment in New Zealand. With a job offer, the applicant can gain a work visa. After obtaining a work visa and full-time employment, the applicant may apply for permanent residence in New Zealand.
