Medicine and Engineering are the two most popular study areas in Russia, as far as English speaking foreign students are concerned. A medicine student studying in English medium will complete it in 6 years including their one year internship and Engineering in 4 years where as in students who wish to study medicine in Russian medium will have to undergo a one year preparatory programme before they are accepted for the main course.
In Russia, students who study medicine or Engineering will have to undergo one year internship after completing their 4/5 years main course.
Nowadays some selected Universities are offering even Post Graduate studies in medicine which are English medium. The duration of the course is 2 years.
For those who apply for Medical specialties the lowest passing score is 50%, and it is just 40% for university applicants who choose specialties related to Engineering, Technology, Economics, and Humanities. Evidently, admission to the first year at the university does not guarantee that the student will be able to study successfully throughout the whole course
Engineers’ specialist Diploma is a very popular and widely accepted qualification. Russian medium students will study five years after their preparatory course and English medium students will study one more year for specialist Diploma after their 4 years Bachelor Degree. Engineer’s specialist’s Diploma holders can get direct entry to Doctor of Philosophy, which can be completed in 3 years.
Since Russia is an active member of Bologna Process and hence, the system of education in Russia has considerably changed over the past five years. Universities have begun implementing a system similar to that of Europe and the USA; 4 years of Bachelor's degree and 2 years of Master’s. These changes are still in progress and some universities still work according to the prior 5-year system.
Safety and Security
The public safety in Russia is provided by the state security and law enforcement service - the Militsia (Police). Special attention is paid to the security of international students. All buildings of universities and student hostels are constantly guarded by the university's internal security department. To enter a university building or a hostel at any time, one needs to show a pass. Guests who come to see the students in their hostel are let in from 4 till 11 o'clock p.m. They must show their ID. These rules are equally valid all over Russia.
Work during the Period of Studies
As per Russian law, students can only work at their free time (after classes or on holidays at their universities as support personnel). Their employer must be licensed to hire foreign citizens.
