Studying in SINGAPORE : Diploma, Degree and Master’s Courses for International Students

Singapore offers study options at almost every academic level. You can begin with a foundation certificate, continue to a diploma and later enter a bachelor’s degree. Graduates can also choose a postgraduate diploma or master’s degree. This flexibility makes Singapore suitable for students with different qualifications. It can work for a Grade 10 student, a 12th-grade pass-out, a diploma holder or a university graduate. However, you must check the institution and course carefully. A private school being registered does not mean that the Singapore Government has accredited every qualification it offers. International students who need a Student’s Pass should normally choose an EduTrust-certified private education institution. The exact course should also appear in the official permitted-course search.

Why Study in Singapore?

Singapore is a major education, business and technology centre in Asia. English is widely used in classrooms and workplaces. The country also has strong links with India, Southeast Asia, China, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. Students can find short and focused courses in Singapore. Many private diploma and degree routes have several intakes each year. This can reduce the waiting time between school and college.

The main advantages include:

  • To study in English as the medium of instruction
  • Flexible routes to enter a study program even with just Grade 10
  • Many private institutions offer multiple intakes.
  • Progression routes from Diploma-Advanced Diploma to degree options
  • Degrees from selected overseas university partners
  • Direct access to an important Asian business centre
  • A fully online Student’s Pass application process
  • Official government listings help students verify private institutions and approved courses.

Singapore is among the best in Asia for further studies. Starting with a one-year course makes it easier for many. The freedom to exit with a one-year qualification or progress to the next level, if required, makes it attractive to many who prioritise affordability, flexibility, and often industry exposure.

Who Can Study in Singapore?

No single admission rule applies to every institution. Each school sets its own academic and English requirements.

The usual entry points are:

Current Qualification Possible Study Options
Grade 9 or Grade 10
Foundation certificate, foundation diploma or selected preparatory course
Grade 12
Diploma, higher diploma, advanced diploma or bachelor’s pathway
Diploma or advanced diploma
Advanced diploma, degree entry or degree with possible credit exemptions
Bachelor’s degree
Graduate certificate, PG diploma, master’s degree or MBA
Degree with work experience
MBA, specialised master’s or executive programme

These are general routes. Admission depends on age, grades, subjects, English ability and the rules of the chosen course.

Study in Singapore After 10th Grade

Study in Singapore

Some private institutions accept international students who have completed ten years of formal education. These students usually enter a foundation-level programme. For example, certain foundation courses published by Kaplan and MDIS accept applicants who have completed Grade 10 or ten years of formal education. Age and English conditions also apply. PSB Academy publishes country-specific entry tables for its foundation programmes. This does not mean that every Grade 10 student can enter every diploma. It also does not mean direct entry to a bachelor’s degree.

A common route is:

  • Complete a foundation certificate or foundation diploma.
  • Progress to a diploma in a chosen subject.
  • Move to an advanced diploma or a recognised bachelor’s route.
  • Complete the degree awarded by the stated university.

This route can help students who do not want to wait until Grade 12. It can also support students whose school marks do not meet direct degree entry. Parents should compare this route with completing Grade 12 at home. They should consider the student’s age, maturity, total cost and long-term career plan.

Foundation and Certificate Courses in Singapore

Foundation courses prepare students for diploma-level study. They may include academic English, mathematics, computing and study skills.

Subject-based foundation courses may cover:

  • Business and management
  • Engineering and technology
  • Computing and information technology
  • Life sciences
  • Media and communication
  • Travel, tourism and hospitality
  • Academic English

A foundation award has value only within its stated purpose and recognition. Some awards are mainly designed for progression within the same institution.

  • What exact qualification or certificate will be awarded?
  • The Singapore regulator’s permission or approval for the course in consideration
  • The foundation’s acceptability to diploma programs
  • The conditions, if any, for progression after the chosen course
  • Other institutions accept the award received after the studies.
  • The new Student’s Pass or extension for the next course

Diploma Courses in Singapore for International Students

Diploma study is one of the most flexible private education routes in Singapore. Courses are usually focused and career-related.

Popular diploma areas include:

Business:

Business administration, Accounting and finance, Banking and financial services, Marketing and digital marketing, Human resource management, Logistics and supply chain management, International trade, Hospitality, and tourism and events management.

Computer science and IT:

Information technology, Cybersecurity and cloud computing, Data analytics and artificial intelligence, Engineering and technology And Biomedical and life sciences, Media, design and communication, Psychology and social sciences and Sports and exercise management.

Many private diplomas take less time than a three-year polytechnic diploma. The duration varies by course and institution. A shorter course is not automatically better, as employers and universities will consider the curriculum, level, awarding body and learning outcomes.

Diploma, Higher Diploma and Advanced Diploma

These names may look similar, but they can represent different academic levels. A standard diploma normally introduces the main subject. A higher or advanced diploma usually adds deeper or more specialised modules. Under Singapore’s private education rules, a registered private education institution may award its own qualifications only up to Advanced Diploma level. A bachelor’s or master’s qualification offered through a private institution normally needs a recognised external awarding institution.

Students should check the following before paying fees:

  • Name of the institution teaching the course
  • Name of the institution awarding the qualification
  • Course level and duration
  • Full-time or part-time status
  • EduTrust status of the teaching institution
  • Student’s Pass eligibility
  • Written progression arrangement
  • Credit exemptions for the next stage
  • Total fee for the full academic route

Can You Progress from a Diploma to a Degree in Singapore?

Yes, many institutions offer diploma-to-degree progression. However, progression varies by programme. One diploma may give entry to Year 2 of a degree. Another may provide only a few module exemptions. A third may offer no advanced standing outside the same education group. A university in the United Kingdom, Australia or another country may award the final degree. The teaching may take place at a private institution in Singapore.

Ask for a written progression map. It should show:

  • The qualification/certificate/diploma you receive after the studies awarded, how to progress to the next program and what qualification you get from that. About the foreign university awarding the degree and the accreditation. The number of credits or modules exempted
  • The remaining study duration
  • The marks needed for progression.
  • The full tuition fee at each stage

Do not rely only on the phrase “pathway to a degree”. Confirm the exact degree and entry conditions.

Can International Students Exit with a Qualification at Each Level?

A student can receive an award after completing each separately approved stage and exit with the qualification. However, it's not automatically granted in every programme and institution. You must check before signing up for any desired programme.

Study Stage Qualification Awarded Completion / Progression Requirement
Foundation stage
Foundation certificate or foundation diploma
All required modules must be passed
Diploma stage
Diploma
The diploma must be a separate registered award
Higher or advanced stage
Higher Diploma or Advanced Diploma
The course must have its own award rules
Degree stage
Bachelor’s degree
Awarded by the named university after all degree requirements are met
Postgraduate stage
PG certificate or PG diploma
Only if it is a standalone award or a stated exit award
Master’s stage
Master’s degree
All taught, project and research requirements must be completed

An exit award is not automatic in every course. If a student withdraws midway, the institution may provide only a transcript. Students should request the award and exit rules in writing before enrolment. They should also read the student contract.

Public Institutions and Private Education Institutions

Singapore has six autonomous universities;

  • Nanyang Technological University
  • National University of Singapore
  • Singapore Management University
  • Singapore University of Technology and Design
  • Singapore Institute of Technology
  • Singapore University of Social Sciences

It also has five local polytechnics. Entry to public universities and polytechnics can be competitive, especially for international applicants.

Private education institutions often offer more flexible intakes and entry routes. They may provide their own certificate and diploma courses. They may also teach degree programmes awarded by overseas universities.

International students should not treat the words “academy”, “college” and “institute” as proof of recognition. Check the official status.

How to Check an Approved School or College in Singapore

Use the official TPGateway PEI Listing before applying

  • The education institution’s current registration status is valid.
  • Its EduTrust certification is valid.
  • The exact course is listed as permitted.
  • And the named awarding institution is correct.

Only EduTrust-certified private education institutions can recruit overseas students who need a Student’s Pass.Registration is not government accreditation. Singapore has no single authority that recognises every private qualification. A future university or employer decides whether to accept it.
EduTrust looks at areas such as academic systems, student protection, governance, support and quality processes. It is an important check, but it does not guarantee admission, employment, or permanent residence.

Foreign Universities and Overseas Degree Providers in Singapore

Singapore has different types of overseas university study.

Foreign institutions with a local campus

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority lists several offshore institutions with local campuses. These include: ESSEC Business School Asia-Pacific, SP Jain School of Global Management, INSEAD Singapore, DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore, Technical University of Munich Asia, Assas International School Singapore, to name a few. These institutions cover areas such as business, management, finance, law, engineering, technology and digital media.Other foreign university campuses and private providers may operate under the private education framework. Check their current registration, EduTrust status, and permitted courses separately.

Foreign degrees taught by a Singapore private institution

Some private colleges teach a programme in Singapore while a partner university awards the degree. The university may be based in the UK, Australia or another country.
This is not always the same as studying at a university branch campus. Check who controls the curriculum, who issues the certificate and whether the final award is the same as the university’s stated overseas award.

Bachelor’s Degree Opportunities in Singapore

International students can study for bachelor’s degrees in many areas, including:

  • Business and international management
  • Accounting, banking and finance
  • Marketing and

The list continues with Computing, software development and cybersecurity; data science and artificial intelligence; engineering and technology; life sciences and biotechnology; and hospitality and tourism.

  • Communication and digital media
  • Psychology and social sciences
  • Design, animation and game development
  • Law and legal studies

Direct degree entry normally requires Grade 12 or an accepted equivalent. Students with a relevant diploma may receive advanced standing.
The degree duration may be shorter when credit exemptions are granted. Confirm these exemptions before joining the diploma. The university, not the recruitment agent, should approve the credit.

PG Diploma Courses in Singapore

A postgraduate diploma can suit graduates who want focused training without immediately committing to a full master’s degree.

Common PG diploma areas include: Business management, Project management, and Finance and fintech.

Marketing and digital strategy, Human resource management, Logistics and supply chain, and Hospitality management. Data analytics, Information technology, Cybersecurity, and Artificial intelligence. Engineering management and Communication and media.

Admission usually requires a bachelor’s degree. Some institutions may consider a diploma plus suitable work experience for selected professional programmes.

A PG diploma may be:

  • A standalone qualification
  • The first stage of a master’s programme
  • A possible exit award from a master’s
  • A professional development course with no master’s progression

Do not assume that every PG diploma carries master’s credits. Ask how many credits can transfer and which university will accept them.

A PG diploma alone does not guarantee an Employment Pass. The job, salary, employer and full work-pass assessment will matter.

Master’s Degree in Singapore for International Students

Singapore offers coursework, professional and research master’s degrees.

Popular master’s subjects include:

  • Master of Business Administration
  • Management and international business
  • Finance, accounting and fintech
  • Business analytics and data science

Artificial intelligence and computing, Cybersecurity and information systems, Electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering, Integrated circuit design and semiconductor technology.

  • Logistics and supply chain management
  • Biotechnology, biomedical science and public health
  • Hospitality and tourism management
  • Communication and public policy
  • Design and innovation
  • Law and arbitration

Local autonomous universities offer a wide range of graduate programmes. Entry is competitive. A relevant bachelor’s degree, good academic performance and English proficiency are commonly required. Foreign institutions also provide specialised options. INSEAD offers programmes such as the MBA, Master in Management and finance-related executive studies. ESSEC offers management and finance programmes at its Asia-Pacific campus. TUM Asia offers engineering and technology-focused Master of Science programmes. SP Jain provides selected postgraduate business programmes across its international campuses. Course locations can differ within the same programme. Some programmes require study in more than one country. Confirm how much of the course is completed in Singapore.

Entry Requirements for a Master’s in Singapore

Requirements vary by university and subject. Applicants may need: A recognised bachelor’s degree, A relevant academic background, Academic transcripts, and English test results, if required.

  • A statement of purpose, a CV, and references
  • Work experience for an MBA or executive course
  • GMAT or GRE for selected programmes
  • A portfolio for design-related courses
  • A research proposal for some research degrees

Some institutions conduct their own English assessment. A waiver may be possible when the previous degree was taught in English. An English waiver for admission does not change any separate employer or professional registration requirement.

Singapore Student’s Pass Process

International students accepted for full-time study normally need a Student’s Pass. The process is largely online. The institution first registers the student’s application. The student then completes the required details through the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority e-service. You do not normally submit a separate student visa application at a Singapore embassy in your home country. You also do not need to be in Singapore while the application is processed. Singapore immigration issues an initial approval. The visa is included in this approval letter (IPA). After arrival, students complete the final formalities in Singapore. This makes the process easier for students applying from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, the Gulf, and other regions. However, approval is never automatic. ICA checks each application. The IPA letter also does not guarantee entry at the checkpoint.

Student’s Pass fees and timing

ICA currently charges a S$45 application fee. A S$60 issuance fee is payable after approval. A S$30 Multiple Journey Visa fee may apply.

ICA states that applications for EduTrust-certified private institutions are normally processed within two weeks. Some cases take longer. Applications for Institutes of Higher Learning are normally processed within one week, or two weeks where a visa is required.

Students should apply within the period stated by ICA. For many full-time applications, this is at least two months and not more than three months before the course begins.

Is the Singapore Student Visa Easy?

The better description is “clear and convenient”. The application is online. There is usually no home-country embassy appointment for the Student’s Pass..

A strong application should include: admission to an eligible full-time course, a valid passport, Complete academic records, Correct personal and family information, Clear financial support, Genuine reasons for choosing the course, Certified English translations where needed, and Consistent information across all forms..

No school or consultant can promise approval. Students should avoid institutions that use guaranteed-visa claims.

Can International Students Work While Studying?

Do not assume that every international student can take a part-time job. Students at institutions listed by the Ministry of Manpower may work during term for up to 16 hours a week. An approved internship that contributes to graduation may also be permitted.

This concession applies only when the student and institution meet the official conditions. The work-pass exemption does not cover many students at private education institutions..

Check the current MOM list before planning any income. Do not use part-time earnings as the main source of tuition or living costs.

How to Qualify for an Employment Pass in Singapore

Completing a course in Singapore does not automatically qualify you for an Employment Pass. You first need a suitable job offer. The Singapore employer or its appointed employment agent submits the application.

Employment Pass eligibility has two main stages:

  • The salary must meet the age-based qualifying level.
  • The application must normally score at least 40 points under COMPASS.

As of September 2026, the minimum qualifying salary starts at S$5,600 per month outside financial services. It starts at S$6,200 in financial services. The required salary rises with age.

For new applications from 1 January 2027, the starting levels rise to S$6,000 and S$6,600 respectively. Students finishing later should plan around the rules in force when an employer applies.

COMPASS considers salary, qualifications, workforce diversity and the employer’s support for local employment. Bonus points may apply in specified cases. A degree-equivalent qualification can earn qualification points. A private diploma by itself will not normally be enough to claim degree-equivalent points. However, an applicant without qualification points can still pass COMPASS through other criteria. The best preparation is choosing a subject linked to a professional role, building practical skills and a clear portfolio, completing relevant projects or internships, improving business communication, starting to network before graduation, targeting employers that hire international professionals and applying for roles with duties and salaries that fit the work-pass level.

An S Pass may suit some associate professional or technical roles. It has different salary rules, employer quotas and levies. It is also employer-sponsored.

What Happens After Completing a Master’s in Singapore?

There is no automatic post-study work visa for every international graduate.

After graduation, the main routes are:

1. Obtain an Employment Pass or S Pass

Find an eligible job. The employer applies for the correct work pass. You cannot start work until the required permission is in place.

2. Apply for a job-search Long-Term Visit Pass, if eligible

Graduates from specified Institutes of Higher Learning may apply to ICA for a Long-Term Visit Pass to seek employment. This option does not cover every graduate of every private institution.
Confirm eligibility before selecting the course. The ability to study on a Student’s Pass does not automatically create LTVP eligibility after graduation.

3. Continue to another academic level

A master’s graduate may enter a PhD, research programme or another specialised qualification. You may need a new or renewed immigration permission.

4. Use the qualification in another country

Studying in Singapore can also support careers in India, the Gulf, Southeast Asia or the country of the awarding university. Recognition depends on the employer, university, professional body and destination country.

5. Consider permanent residence later

ICA considers applications under the prevailing rules and each applicant’s overall profile after the results of studies or an Employment Pass.

Return on Investment of Studying in Singapore

The return on investment depends on the course, awarding body, total cost and career results.Singapore can offer good value when a student chooses a focused programme with a clear academic route. Shorter private courses may reduce tuition and living costs. Several intakes can also reduce waiting time.

The strongest sources of value are:

  • A shorter route to a recognised qualification
  • Study in English
  • Access to Singapore’s business environment
  • A degree from a clearly named overseas university
  • Practical projects and internships
  • Regional professional contacts
  • Skills linked to professional and technical jobs
  • The ability to stop after a completed stage with an award, where the course permits it

The risks include:

Choosing a weak or unsuitable private qualification, assuming a diploma guarantees degree credit, depending on part-time work that is not permitted, Underestimating accommodation and living costs, expecting an automatic post-study work visa and selecting a course that does not support Employment Pass-level jobs

A simple ROI calculation

Use this formula before deciding to study a particular program in Singapore:

Total investment = tuition + accommodation + living costs + insurance + travel + pass fees + lost earnings

Calculate it as follows:

Payback period = total investment divided by annual savings after graduation

For example, assume a student spends S$45,000 in total. After graduation, the student saves S$18,000 a year from employment. The estimated payback period is 2.5 years.

This is only an example. It is not a salary or employment promise.

Compare at least three courses. Use the full cost up to the final qualification, not only the first diploma fee.

How to Improve Your Study in Singapore ROI

Start with the career outcome and work backwards.

Choose a programme that meets these tests:

  • The institution is properly registered.
  • EduTrust is valid if a Student’s Pass is required.
  • The exact course is officially permitted.
  • The awarding body is clearly stated.
  • The progression route is given in writing.
  • The subject has realistic job demand.
  • The course contains useful practical work.
  • The total budget is affordable without illegal work.
  • The final job level matches work-pass requirements.

A low tuition fee does not always produce the best return. A higher-quality course with stronger progression may cost less over the full route.

Study in Singapore for Indian Students

Study in Singapore

Singapore is close to India and has frequent air connections. Its use of English also makes daily life and study easier for many Indian students.

Students from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and other Indian cities can complete the application online before travel.

Grade 10-pass applicants have selected foundation routes. Grade 12 passouts can compare diploma and bachelor’s pathways. Indian degree holders can apply for PG diplomas, MBA programmes and specialised master’s courses.

It is also important to check how the foreign university degree is recognised for regulated careers and further public-sector study.

Study in Singapore from the Gulf

Indian and other expatriate students living in Qatar, the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Kuwait or Saudi Arabia can also apply from their country of residence.

The Student’s Pass application is online. Students normally travel only after receiving the required approval.

Families should compare Singapore’s shorter course structures with longer programmes elsewhere. They should also budget for accommodation, food, transport and insurance.
