Is FOM University recognised in Germany?

Yes. FOM University has been state-recognised by the Science and Research Ministry of North Rhine-Westphalia since 1993. The German Council of Science and Humanities granted FOM institutional accreditation in 2004. The university became the first private university in Germany to receive FIBAA system accreditation in 2012. System accreditation means that the university has an approved quality system for developing and monitoring its degree programmes. FOM courses also carry the relevant German accreditation. FIBAA has awarded FOM its “Excellence in Digital Education” seal. This reflects the university’s work in digital teaching and learning. For students, this means that a FOM degree is an officially recognised German university qualification. Recognition for a particular job, professional licence or further course can still depend on the rules of the country and profession concerned.

Can Indian students join FOM University without Studienkolleg?

  • Generally, Indian school qualifications do not provide direct entry to a bachelor’s degree in Germany. At almost all public universities, the usual next step is a Studienkolleg followed by the Feststellungsprüfung, or FSP.

  • FOM University offers another route for eligible applicants to its own international bachelor’s programmes.

  • Students with 70% and above in their 12th grade who have studied relevant subjects can apply to sit the FOM entrance exam. Applicants who succeed may then become eligible to start one of FOM’s full-time bachelor’s degrees.

  • One important point to understand: The FOM entrance route is for admission to the specified bachelor’s programmes at FOM. It should not be presented as a general FSP qualification for applying to every university in Germany.

Studying at the FOM Essen campus

FOM is a private university, so students pay tuition fees. All three English-taught bachelor’s programmes attract a total fee of €27,500 for the entire duration of three years. Students can pay the fees yearly in three instalments.

If you need to attend a short preparatory program of two months, the preparation course has a separate fee of €2,750.

Students must also budget for:

  • Accommodation and a rental deposit.

  • Food and local travel

  • Health insurance

  • Residence permit and administrative costs

  • Study materials and personal expenses

  • Proof of funds required for the German student visa

Part-time work can help with regular expenses, but it should not be the main plan for paying tuition. Work availability, language ability and study schedules vary.

Career value of a FOM University degree

FOM programmes are built around employable skills. The courses mix subject knowledge with projects, communication and practical application.

The university’s company network is a useful advantage. Still, students must use it actively. A strong CV, German language skills and relevant experience can improve the chances of finding internships and graduate work.

International graduates of German universities may be able to remain in Germany to look for qualified employment after graduation. As per the current immigration rules, international students qualify for a post-graduate visa called a ‘job seeker’ visa for 18 months.
