Opportunity Card Germany 2026 : Chancenkarte Visa Requirements, Points and Application

Germany’s Opportunity Card allows qualified people to enter the country and look for suitable work. The German name for this residence permit is Chancenkarte. It is also known as the Germany job search Opportunity Card, job seeker card, or Opportunity Card visa in Germany. Some applicants search online for the “opportunicard visa.” The correct term is Opportunity Card visa. The Opportunity Card may suit you if you have a recognised qualification but no German job offer. It lets you meet employers, attend interviews, and explore the German job market in person. However, receiving a Chancenkarte does not guarantee employment. Applicants need a clear job-search plan, sufficient funds, and realistic career goals.

What Is the Opportunity Card?

The Opportunity Card is a German residence permit for qualified jobseekers from outside the European Union.

It was introduced under Section 20a of the German Residence Act. The scheme became available on 1 June 2024.

The Opportunity Card Germany route allows eligible applicants to enter Germany without having a full-time job offer. They can stay for up to one year while looking for qualified employment.

The card may also be used to find a suitable qualification measure. This is helpful when a foreign qualification needs further recognition in Germany.

The official German government portal explains that the initial job search Opportunity Card can be issued for up to 12 months. See the official Opportunity Card information.

Who Can Apply for the Opportunity Card Visa?

The Chancenkarte is mainly intended for nationals of countries outside the EU, European Economic Area, and Switzerland.

There are two main ways to qualify.

Route 1: Apply as a Recognised Skilled Worker

You can apply directly if:

  • You completed a university degree or vocational qualification in Germany.

  • Your foreign university degree matches a German degree.

  • Your foreign vocational qualification is fully recognised in Germany.

Applicants under this route do not need to collect six points.

They also do not normally need to prove German or English skills for the Opportunity Card. Still, German skills can make a major difference during the job search.

Route 2: Apply Through the Opportunity Card Points System

You may use the points route if your foreign qualification is not fully recognised in Germany.

First, you must meet these basic conditions:

  • You have a university degree recognised by the country where it was awarded.

  • Alternatively, you have a state-recognised vocational qualification.

  • A vocational course must normally involve at least two years of full-time training.

  • You have German language skills at A1 level or higher.

  • Alternatively, you have English language skills at B2 level or higher.

  • You can support yourself during your stay.

  • You receive at least six points.

Meeting the six-point target alone is not enough. Your qualifications, language ability, and financial situation must also meet the basic requirements.

Opportunity Card Points System

The Germany Opportunity Card points system considers qualifications, work experience, language ability, age, and previous connections with Germany.

Opportunity Card Points Example

Consider an engineer who is 32 years old. The applicant has three years of relevant experience and German at B1 level.

The points may be calculated as follows:

  • Age under 35: 2 points

  • Two years or more of recent experience: 2 points

  • German at B1 level: 2 points

The total is six points.

This person may qualify through the points system if they also meet all basic conditions.

Qualifications Accepted for the Chancenkarte

A foreign university degree may be checked through the anabin database.

The university and the degree should have suitable results in anabin. If the required information is unavailable, the applicant may need a Comparability Statement from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB).

Applicants with vocational qualifications may require a Statement on a Foreign Vocational Qualification, also issued through ZAB.

A recognition decision from a German authority may be required for regulated professions.

Doctors, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, teachers, and certain other professionals should check the rules for their occupation. The Opportunity Card does not replace a professional licence.

Language Requirements for the Opportunity Card

Language requirements depend on the application route.

Applicants using the points route need at least:

  • German at A1 level, or

  • English at B2 level.

You can earn more points for higher German levels. German at A2 gives one point. B1 gives two points. B2 or higher gives three points. English at C1 or above may provide one additional point. The basic B2 English requirement does not itself add a point. Language certificates must come from an accepted examination provider. Goethe-Institut certificates may be used for German. IELTS and TOEFL are common proofs of English. As a rule, the exam date should be no more than one year old. The German mission handling the application makes the final decision on acceptable proof. Read the official Chancenkarte FAQs.

Is German Compulsory for the Opportunity Card?

German is not compulsory in every case.

A recognised skilled worker may apply without submitting proof of language skills. A points-based applicant can meet the basic language condition with B2 English.

Yet,

Eligibility and employability are different matters.

Many jobs in Germany require German for meetings, customer contact, documentation, and workplace safety. Even basic German can help with accommodation, registration, banking, and daily life.

Candidates should study the language before travelling. B1 or B2 German may provide better employment prospects in many fields.

Opportunity Card Financial Requirements

Every applicant must show enough money to cover living expenses in Germany. For 2026, the official amount is €1,091 net per month. An applicant seeking the full 12-month period may therefore need to show funding for the full year.

Proof may be provided through:

  • A German blocked account

  • A formal Declaration of Commitment

  • Income from an accepted part-time employment contract

  • A combination of permitted funding methods

If part-time net earnings are below the required monthly amount, the applicant may cover the difference through a blocked account. The required figure can change. Always check the amount applicable when submitting the Opportunity Card visa application.

How Long Is the Opportunity Card Valid?

The initial job search Opportunity Card can be issued for up to 12 months. A shorter period may be granted if the applicant proves funds for only part of the year.

The initial card cannot normally exceed 12 months. It may sometimes be extended within that maximum period if the applicant later proves sufficient funds.

In certain cases, a separate extended Opportunity Card, called the Folge-Chancenkarte, may be available for up to two years. This may apply when a person finds qualified employment but cannot yet receive another suitable work residence permit.

Can You Work with an Opportunity Card in Germany?

Yes. Chancenkarte holders can take one or more part-time jobs. The combined working time must not exceed 20 hours per week during the job search period.

Applicants may also complete a trial job for up to two weeks with each employer. The trial must be connected to:

  • Qualified employment

  • Vocational training

  • A qualification or recognition measure

A trial job is not permission to work full-time without the correct residence permit.

Can You Work Full-Time on the Opportunity Card?

The initial Opportunity Card is mainly for finding work. It normally permits only 20 hours of employment per week. Once you receive a suitable full-time job offer, you must apply for the correct residence title.

Depending on the job and your profile, this could be:

  • An EU Blue Card

  • A work visa for qualified professionals

  • A visa for professionally experienced workers

  • A recognition partnership residence permit

  • A residence permit for vocational training

  • A residence permit for self-employment

  • An extended Opportunity Card in an eligible case

The local Foreigners Authority in Germany handles this change of residence status.

Can I Search for Self-Employment Opportunities?

The Opportunity Card may also allow you to explore self-employment possibilities.

However, starting and operating a business involves separate residence conditions. You must apply for the appropriate self-employment permit before carrying out unrestricted business activity.

Applicants should prepare a business plan, funding details, and evidence of commercial viability.

Documents Required for the Opportunity Card Visa

The exact checklist may differ by country and German mission.

Common Opportunity Card visa documents include:

  • A valid passport, completed visa application, Recent biometric photographs, University degree or vocational qualification, Academic transcripts or training records, anabin results, or a ZAB assessment, German or English language certificate

  • German or English language certificate

  • Employment certificates

  • Detailed CV

  • Employer reference letters

  • Proof of previous legal residence in Germany, if claiming a point

  • Proof of sufficient funds, Blocked account confirmation, if used, Declaration of Commitment, if applicable, Health insurance for the visa period

How to Apply for the Opportunity Card Germany

Step 1: Check Your Qualification

Find out whether your university degree or vocational qualification is recognised.

Check anabin or apply to ZAB if necessary.

Step 2: Choose the Correct Eligibility Route

Decide whether you qualify as a recognised skilled worker.

If not, calculate your score under the Chancenkarte points system.

Step 3: Arrange Language Proof

Points-based applicants need at least A1 German or B2 English.

Use an accepted language examination.

Step 4: Prepare Financial Evidence

Open a blocked account or arrange another accepted form of financial support.

Make sure the amount covers the intended period.

Step 5: Arrange Health Insurance

Obtain suitable incoming health insurance for the visa period.

German health insurance requirements may change after you begin employment.

Step 6: Submit the Application

Opportunity Card applications can be made online in many countries through the German Consular Services Portal.

If online filing is unavailable, follow the process given by the relevant German embassy or consulate.

Step 7: Attend the Visa Appointment

Submit your original documents and biometric information.

Be ready to explain your qualifications, experience, preferred jobs, and job search plan.

Step 8: Wait for the Decision

Processing time depends on the embassy, document checks, and application volume.

Do not book non-refundable travel before receiving the visa.

How to Prepare a Strong Chancenkarte Application

A successful application begins with correct eligibility. Clear planning also matters.

Prepare a German-style CV. Keep it factual and easy to read.

Identify suitable employers before applying. Make a list of roles that match your education and experience.

Collect detailed employment letters. They should mention your position, duties, dates, and working hours.

Check whether your occupation is regulated. Begin professional recognition early if needed.

Improve your German before travelling. English may meet the visa rule, but German often improves the job search.

Prepare a realistic budget. Rent deposits, temporary accommodation, transport, insurance, and daily expenses can be high.

Finding Jobs with the Opportunity Card

Start applying before you travel.

Useful job sources include:

  • Make it in Germany

  • Federal Employment Agency

  • EURES

  • Company career pages

  • Professional networking websites

  • Recognised recruitment agencies

  • Regional job portals

Adjust each application to the vacancy. Avoid sending the same general cover letter to every employer. Mention your Opportunity Card status clearly. Explain that you can attend interviews and trial work in Germany. Keep records of every application. Note the employer, position, date, contact person, and result.

Opportunity Card and Family Members

A spouse cannot normally join an Opportunity Card holder through standard spouse reunification unless the spouse has an independent residence right.

If both partners qualify for the Chancenkarte, they can submit separate applications and travel together. One partner may receive an additional point if the other partner also meets the Opportunity Card conditions and both plan to enter Germany together. Children may be able to accompany the applicant under certain conditions. Sufficient funds must be available for every accompanying child. Family reunification usually becomes more practical after the main applicant finds qualified employment and changes to a suitable work residence permit.

Shortage Occupations in Germany

A qualification in a listed shortage occupation can provide one point.

Common shortage areas may include:

  • Engineering

  • Information technology

  • Healthcare

  • Nursing

  • Science

  • Architecture and planning

  • Teaching

  • Certain management professions

The official shortage occupation list can change. Applicants should check whether their exact occupation is included when applying. A shortage occupation point does not guarantee a job. Employers will still assess skills, experience, language ability, and professional recognition.

Opportunity Card for Indian Applicants

Indian graduates and trained professionals can apply if they meet the general conditions.

An Indian university degree may need positive anabin results. If the institution or qualification is not clearly listed, a ZAB Statement of Comparability may be necessary.

Vocational qualification holders may require a ZAB statement confirming that the training is state-recognised in India and meets the required duration.

Employment letters should explain the applicant’s duties in detail. Simple appointment letters may not be enough to prove professional experience.

Indian applicants must also follow the current document and appointment instructions issued for applications from India.

Opportunity Card vs Job Seeker Visa

The Opportunity Card has expanded the routes available to foreign jobseekers.

Opportunity Card

Traditional job search route

Can use a points system

Usually depends on a recognised qualification

Allows up to 20 working hours per week

Work rights depend on the specific permit

Permits limited trial work

Trial work may be more restricted

Can be issued for up to one year

Validity depends on the applicable route

No full-time job offer is needed

No job offer is normally needed

The right option depends on your qualification, present location, and purpose of stay. People who completed higher education or vocational training in Germany may have access to a separate 18-month job search residence permit. That route can offer wider working rights.

Advantages of the Opportunity Card Visa

The Chancenkarte offers several practical benefits:

  • You don't need a full-time job offer before entry.

  • You can attend interviews in person.

  • You can meet employers directly.

  • You may work up to 20 hours per week.

  • Short trial employment is allowed.

  • Both academic and vocational qualifications may be considered.

  • The points system recognises age, experience, and language ability.

  • You can change to a suitable work residence permit after finding a job.

Important Limitations

The Opportunity Card visa in Germany should not be treated as a guaranteed path to migration.

It does not guarantee employment, remove professional recognition requirements or permit unrestricted full-time work during the search period.

Part-time income may not cover every living expense, and English-speaking vacancies can attract many applicants.

Accommodation can be expensive in major cities.

The card also has a limited validity period. Applicants need to use their time carefully.
