What are the study routes after high school in Germany?

The main routes are language plus foundation preparation, a linked public university pathway, an English-taught foundation and degree, or direct bachelor’s entry. Your school certificate, subjects, grades and chosen course determine which routes you can use. Eligible A-Level and IB Diploma students may qualify for direct entry. Students who need foundation preparation follow the appropriate Studienkolleg or accepted foundation route.

Our first destination to consider

Why put Germany first for your bachelor’s studies?

Germany combines public university options with several ways to prepare for degree study. Choose the route that fits your qualification and family budget.

Public university options

Many public bachelor’s programmes charge no tuition. Semester contributions and living costs still apply. Some states, institutions and programmes charge tuition.

More choice through German

German preparation can make a wider range of degree programmes available. It also helps with daily life and many placement opportunities.

Preparation before the degree

Language and subject preparation give school leavers time to build the skills needed for their next stage. English-medium options are also available.

Fast-track study routes after high school: one coordinated plan

Begin learning while applications are being prepared. Continue the same preparation pathway in Germany after your visa is issued and travel is permitted.

The all-in-one route brings together German language learning, foundation preparation where required, accommodation and living support. It is designed for eligible national-certificate, GCE A-Level and IB Diploma school leavers.

Check your qualification

Review your certificate, subject choices, results and intended degree. Confirm the provider, admission conditions and package in writing.

Start German online

No prior German skills are required to begin the offered language pathway. Start from level zero with the Studienkolleg online.

Keep learning during applications

Continue language classes while the admission and visa process is ongoing. Submit the documents and language evidence required for your application.

Move to classes in Germany

Once your visa is issued and valid for travel, arrive on the agreed date. Enrol with the Studienkolleg and continue attending classes in person.

“Fast-track” means coordinating language learning and application preparation. Progress depends on attendance, assessments, admission conditions and visa processing. Starting the language pathway at zero German does not waive later language or visa requirements.

Your certificate determines the next stage

Study pathways after school: foundation or advanced German?

The first language stage can start at zero. After that, your academic eligibility decides whether you need foundation subjects or further degree-language preparation.

ZERO → B1 → FOUNDATION → DEGREE

National-certificate study routes after high school

Eligible Grade 12 national school-certificate holders follow language preparation first. After achieving B1, they progress to the subject-based foundation in this offered pathway.

Choose the foundation course linked to your intended degree. Progression also depends on the provider’s academic and assessment requirements.

ZERO → ADVANCED GERMAN → DEGREE

GCE A-Level routes to a bachelor’s degree

Qualified GCE A-Level students who meet direct-entry requirements can continue through further German levels rather than a foundation
course.

Prepare towards C1 or the TestDaF result accepted by the chosen university. Check your A-Level subjects, final grades and any subject restrictions.

DIRECT ELIGIBILITY OR FOUNDATION

IB Diploma routes: direct entry or foundation

Qualified IB Diploma students with direct-entry eligibility continue advanced German preparation towards accepted C1-level evidence or TestDaF results.

IB Diploma graduates who need and qualify for foundation preparation progress to the foundation course after B1, like eligible Grade 12 school leavers.

ZERO → B1 → FOUNDATION → DEGREE

National-certificate study routes after high school

Eligible Grade 12 national school-certificate holders follow language preparation first. After achieving B1, they progress to the subject-based foundation in this offered pathway.

Choose the foundation course linked to your intended degree. Progression also depends on the provider’s academic and assessment requirements.

ZERO → ADVANCED GERMAN → DEGREE

GCE A-Level routes to a bachelor’s degree

Qualified GCE A-Level students who meet direct-entry requirements can continue through further German levels rather than a foundation course.

B1, C1 and TestDaF: what each stage means

B1 is the foundation-entry point specified for this offered route. Other Studienkollegs may require B2 or an entrance test. C1 course completion alone may not be accepted as degree-entry proof.

For TestDaF, TDN 4 in all four components is the standard language threshold for unrestricted admission. Check the exact certificate and scores accepted by your degree programme.

Budget with clarity

Germany after Grade 12: check eligibility before paying

The language starting point and the academic entry conditions are separate. A zero-German start does not remove school-certificate requirements.

70%

INDIAN CLASS XII
ESTABLISHED PATHWAY THRESHOLD

From Winter Semester 2026/27, APS India lists at least 70% overall in Class XII for the established Studienkolleg pathway. APS verification and the relevant subject requirements also apply.

Other national certificates are assessed under their own recognition rules. A-Level and IB qualifications require a separate subject-and-grade review. No school certificate guarantees a place.

A linked public university pathway

Language, foundation and degree can be available through a public university route. Check the exact institution and written progression conditions for each stage.

An English-taught foundation and degree

Some providers offer English-medium foundation routes to selected bachelor’s programmes. Confirm the accepting university, recognition, English evidence and degree progression conditions.

Direct study without foundation or German

This can be possible when your qualification meets direct-entry rules and your degree is taught in English. Check the university’s accepted English tests, tuition and academic conditions.

Discuss these three questions

Choose a school-leaver pathway that fits your plans

The most suitable option should match your academic record, your budget and the degree you want to pursue.

What does your qualification allow?

Review the certificate, subjects and grades. Establish whether direct entry or foundation preparation is available for your intended course.

What can your family fund?

Compare preparation, tuition and living costs across the whole route. Plan funding beyond the package period, including possible extensions.

What do you want to do later?

Consider your subject, preferred teaching language and plans for further study or work. German learning may remain useful even with an English-taught degree.
