Study medicine in Germany at a public university

Germany’s public universities offer a different route: German-taught medicine leading to the State Examination. Admission is competitive, and your school qualification must meet the entry rules. Some applicants need preparatory study before applying to medicine. Advanced German is essential.

Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin charges no tuition fees for medicine. But enrolment and re-registration charges still apply. Heidelberg also offers medicine in German, but international tuition rules may apply. Many other public universities offer tuition-free medicine studies.  You still need to fund accommodation, insurance, living expenses, and any language or foundation preparation.

Plan your medical licence before choosing a university

Start with the country where you want to work after graduation. An academic award, university admission and professional registration are separate matters. Directory listing alone is not accreditation or approval to practise.

MBBS in Europe for Indian applicants

Indian citizens and OCI applicants must meet the applicable NEET and NMC requirements if they plan to return to India with a foreign degree. For new applicants covered by the FMGE Regulations 2021, key conditions include at least 54 months of medical study, a 12-month internship at the same foreign medical institution, English-medium instruction and registration or licensing in the degree-awarding country at the standard applicable to its citizens.

A German-taught public-university course leads to a worldwide respected medical qualification accepted across Europe for a direct license, provided the local/regional language requirement is met.

Clinical language and your future country of practice

If you plan to practise in Germany, another European country or the Gulf, check the relevant medical regulator’s registration, language and postgraduate-training requirements. Learning in English does not remove the need to communicate with patients in the local language in a clinical setting in a particular country.
