Your guide to the Digital Master Test

dMAT

for Master’s Studies in Germany

The Digital Master Test (dMAT) is an academic aptitude test administered by g.a.s.t. For selected Indian graduates, it forms part of the APS documentation for Master’s study in Germany. Start by checking whether the requirement applies to your previous degree and the APS procedure.

Latest official test-session status

APS India has announced mid-January and mid-March as the next test windows, particularly relevant to applicants for the winter semester 2027/28. Exact test dates, registration opening, and an updated list of affected fields are yet to be announced. Check the official notice before making plans.

Before you book

Who needs to take the dMAT?

Check your previous qualification, intended intake and APS application history together.

For selected fields, the requirement starts with Master’s applications for the summer semester 2027. The revised field list is pending. The transitional exemption applies if APS online registration was completed before 29 June 2026 OR if complete application documents were dispatched before that date for that procedure.

Applicants outside the current dMAT requirement

Bachelor’s and PhD applicants, students with fewer than five completed semesters of a three-year Bachelor’s or seven of a four-year Bachelor’s, degrees outside affected fields, and officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university-partnership participants are outside the current requirement.

An already-issued APS certificate does not trigger a retrospective test for that completed procedure. A new APS application follows the rules then in force.

Which fields have been listed?

The introductory list covers engineering; commerce, accounting, finance and economics; and business or management. Treat this as the earlier published scope, not the forthcoming updated list. For a mixed or differently named degree, ask APS to clarify your case before paying.

Keep your transcripts, degree title, institution details, intended intake and proof of earlier APS registration or dispatch ready when seeking clarification.

Understand the roles

dMAT, APS and university admission

Keep three separate decisions in view when planning your Master’s application.

Stage Responsible body What it covers
dMAT
g.a.s.t.
Test registration, delivery and the aptitude-test certificate.
APS verification
APS India
Verification of academic documents and the applicable APS procedure.
Master’s admission
Your chosen university
Assessment against the degree programme’s entry and selection rules.

Check institution and degree recognition in anabin before booking. dMAT cannot correct missing recognition. A low score alone does not automatically mean APS refusal.

Build a programme shortlist separately. Record each course’s subject prerequisites, grades, language evidence, required tests, application route and deadline. Check university rules for GRE, GATE or other tests; dMAT is not an automatic replacement

Registration and cost

How to register for the dMAT

Use the official g.a.s.t. portal when booking opens for your session.

  • Confirm the requirement. Resolve any uncertainty about your degree or APS exemption before booking.
  • Check the session. Read its registration deadline, available centres, fee and result-release information.
  • Create or access your participant account. Use accurate personal details and complete the required passport-style photo upload.
  • Choose the correct test. For the APS route, both the Core Module and General Academic Module are compulsory.
  • Complete payment and save confirmation. Booking is completed only after the participation fee is paid. Keep portal access and follow the final test-day instructions.

dMAT fee and payment

APS currently lists the test fee as €150. Check the amount displayed for your session. PayPal and Mastercard or Visa credit cards with 3D Secure are listed payment methods; debit cards are not accepted. This route requires a valid passport for identification.

Plan separately for APS charges, travel and any advisory service you choose. Read the cancellation terms before payment: cancellation deadlines, deductions and absence rules affect refunds. Contact g.a.s.t. about a booking or technical issue.

Where can you take the test?

Published Indian locations include Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune. Berlin and Kathmandu are also listed. Check the booking portal for available centres and seats for your chosen session.

Inside the test

dMAT format and preparation

Prepare to work through unfamiliar problems, rather than memorise answers.

Part What to practise
Core Module
Figure Sequences, Mathematical Equations and Latin Squares.
General Academic Module
Applying analytical skills and knowledge to academic problems.

The examination lasts about three and a half hours, including the break. Allow additional time for arrival and identity checks. The APS-route questions are single-choice; current subject modules are in English.

Use the official dMAT practice materials

  • Read the General Academic Module booklet before attempting the exercises. Learn the instructions for every task type.
  • Work through the sample tasks, then review the published solutions. Note where you misread a rule or lost time.
  • Practise without taking notes: the official booklet states that notes are not permitted during the examination.
  • Use the provider’s demonstration in your participant portal to become familiar with the test interface.

The official booklet explains the task types in detail; the live test provides only brief reminders. Use the General Academic Module material for the APS route rather than assuming a different subject-module booklet is suitable.

After the examination

Understanding your dMAT result

Read both the module scores and the percentile ranks on your certificate.

Each module has a dMAT score on a 0–200 scale, with an average of 100. The overall score is the sum of the two module scores. A percentile rank of 71 means 71% of participants scored the same or lower; it does not mean 71% of questions were answered correctly.

Is there a universal dMAT pass mark?

Universities decide how to use the result in admission. Check your chosen programme’s published criteria rather than relying on an unofficial universal cutoff. Download the certificate from your participant portal once results are released. The certificate is valid indefinitely, although universities may set their own acceptance periods.

Retakes are permitted. Check available sessions and booking terms.

Keep your application moving

Submitting dMAT with your APS application

Prepare the academic documents now, even if the test certificate is not yet available.

Affected applicants may submit complete APS application documents in advance. Verification can begin before the dMAT report arrives; final APS certification waits until the required score report has been verified.

Only the dMAT certificate may follow later. Include all required academic qualification documents in the initial submission; you cannot add additional or updated academic qualification documents with the dMAT certificate for the same procedure.

Your application planning checklist

Check the APS checklist that matches your qualification and procedure.

Keep the initial academic document set complete and consistent.

Save your dMAT booking, participant login and result-release information.

Track APS, test and university deadlines separately.

Understand the current documents and financial requirements.
