Career planning explained

What is a career path?

A career path is the sequence of learning, training and work that leads towards your chosen occupation. For an overseas career, this may include language preparation, recognition of your qualifications and permission to practise.

Six routes to compare

Career path options for training and work

Begin with the route that matches your education and professional status. Each pathway has its own entry requirements.

01

SCHOOL LEAVERS AND CAREER CHANGERS

Career path through Ausbildung

Ausbildung combines training for an occupation with the knowledge needed to do the job. Dual programmes include company training and vocational-school learning.

Choose an occupation that fits your interests and daily work preferences. Entry requirements depend on the employer, training school and profession.

Dual training includes a monthly training allowance. Check the contract, deductions, accommodation costs and any extra funds needed.

STARTING A NURSING CAREER

Nursing career path after school

Nursing training in Germany combines classroom study with supervised practical training. The full-time programme generally takes three years and includes a state examination.

Applicants need an accepted school qualification and must meet language, health and suitability requirements. German at B1 or B2 may be required, depending on the federal state.

This route is for people beginning nursing training. If you already hold a nursing qualification, check the recognition route instead.

03

NURSES QUALIFIED ABROAD

Career progression for qualified nurses

Qualified nurses usually need recognition and permission to practise before working in Germany as nursing professionals. German at B2 is generally required for recognition.

The authority reviews your training and other required evidence. Depending on the assessment, an adaptation period or examination may be needed.

Prepare qualification records, clinical training details and registration documents where applicable. Review the employer’s role and any costs before accepting an offer.

04

PHYSIOTHERAPY GRADUATES

Career pathway for physiotherapists

Physiotherapy is a regulated profession in Germany. The responsible authority must recognise your qualification and grant the required professional permission.

Your training is compared with German requirements. If significant differences remain, an adaptation course or knowledge examination may be required.

Language evidence is also needed. Berlin, for example, requires B2 German. Confirm the accepted evidence with the state where you intend to work.

05

QUALIFIED DOCTORS AND DENTISTS

Medical and dental career paths in Germany

Doctors must meet Germany’s medical recognition and licensing requirements before practising. Medical specialist training usually takes place through paid clinical work under authorised supervision.

Physicians generally need B2 German and a medical language examination at approximately C1 level. Passing a language test alone does not grant a licence.

Dentists follow a separate dental recognition process. Check its language, knowledge-assessment and professional requirements rather than applying the medical rules to a BDS qualification.

Confirm the conditions for any temporary licence and whether work will count towards specialist training. Funding and a preferred specialty place are subject to separate decisions.

06

DIPLOMA HOLDERS AND GRADUATES

Career development through skilled employment

A professional qualification and a suitable job offer can support a skilled-employment route. The applicable requirements depend on your qualification, occupation and residence route.

For a work visa for qualified professionals, recognised or comparable qualifications and a qualified job offer are key requirements. Regulated professions also require permission to practise.

Compare the job description, contract and employer’s language expectations. A general promise of work is not the same as a suitable offer.

Questions about your career path

What is a career path programme?
It is a route towards an occupation or the next stage of professional work. It may involve vocational training, language study, qualification recognition or further clinical training. The requirements depend on the profession.
Compare vocational training, nursing training and degree study. Start with your interests, school qualification, language readiness and budget. A route should suit the work you want to do.
Check professional recognition first. Your existing qualification may support a recognition route. The authority’s assessment determines whether additional training or an examination is needed.
Yes. You can discuss options and begin learning German from the basics. Before training, professional practice or a visa application, you must meet the requirements of your chosen route.
No. Employers choose candidates, professional authorities decide recognition and licensing, and immigration authorities decide visas. Preparation helps you submit a stronger application but cannot replace those decisions.
Are all career path programmes paid?
No. Dual vocational training includes an allowance, while language preparation and other courses may involve fees. Check exactly when payment starts and which costs remain yours.
No. You also need the appropriate professional licence and permission to work. The state licensing authority decides whether the other conditions have been met.
No. Funding depends on the scheme, residence, personal circumstances and approval. Check the costs it covers and obtain a decision before relying on the support.
A change may be possible, but it needs a separate review. Check admission requirements, recognition, prior learning, funding and the residence conditions for the proposed route.
We discuss your qualifications, experience and goals. We can then explain relevant routes and agree the scope of application, document or language-preparation guidance.
