The first on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list to hold the office was Shri. Jawaharlal Nehru. He was the Prime Minister who stayed in the executive power for 16 years and 286 days until he died in 1964. He was appointed on 15th August 1947 by the then Mountbatten of Burma as he was in charge of the Dominion of India. Then the first general elections were held in the year 1952. Again Shri Jawaharlal Nehru was appointed the Prime Minister by the then President Dr Rajendra Prasad.
The Indian Prime Minister, Gulzarilal Nanda, took the vow on 27th May 1964, which ended on 9th June 1964. It lasted only 13 days to fill the gap left over by the sudden death of Jawaharlal Nehru.
The next incumbent and second Prime Minister on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list was from the Allahabad constituency. He was appointed on 9th June 1964, and he was the engineering officer of the nation till 11th January 1966, which spun for one year and 216 days.
Gulzarilal Nanda’s second innings, too, lasted for 13 short days. He was appointed on 11th January 1966 and continued the office till 24th January 1966. Both times, he represented the Indian National Congress from the constituency of Sabarkantha, only to alter the changes owing to the sudden demise of two Prime Ministers.

Indira Gandhi became the third on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list who resumed the work left over by Gulzarilal. She was appointed on 24th January 1966 and held the powers till 24th March 1977 for 11 years and 59 days. She had the Prime Ministership for three terms, where first she was appointed by Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and then V.V. Giri.
The next and fourth Prime Minister of India was Morarji Desai, who took power on 24th March 1977 and continued till 28th July 1979 for two years and 126 days. He was appointed by an acting President named B.D. Jatti.
The fifth on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list to occupy the seat was Charansingh from the constituency of Baghpat. He was appointed on 28th July 1979 and was in power till 14th January 1980, which lasted only for 170 days.
The next Prime Minister after Charansingh was Indira Gandhi, not from Raebali this time but from Medak. She vowed for the third time on 14th January 1980 and ruled till 31st October 1984, the day she was assassinated. She accounted for four years and 291 days. President Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy appointed the predecessor and Indira Gandhi.
The Sixth from the Indian Prime Ministers’ list was Rajiv Gandhi from the constituency of Amethi. He was immediately absorbed after the assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi on 31st October and continued till 2nd December 1989, which was for five years and 32 days. He was appointed by then-President Zail Singh.

The Seventh Prime Minister to rule India as a Prime Minister is Vishwanath Pratap Singh from the constituency of Fatehpur for 343 days beginning from 2nd December 1989 to 10th November 1990. He was appointed as the Prime Minister by R. Venkataraman, then President.
The Eighth Prime Minister on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list was Chandrasekhar from Ballia. He began work on 10th November and continued his work till 21st June 1991 for 223 days. R. Venkatraman appointed Chandrasekhar and his predecessor.
The next incumbent and Ninth Prime Minister was P.V.Narasimha Rao of the Nandyal constituency. He took to his power on 21st June 1991 and continued to work till 16th May 1996, accounting for four years and 330 days.
The Tenth Prime Minister was Atal Bihari Vajpayee from Lucknow, sworn in on 16th May 1996 but lasted only for an interim period of 16 days till 1st June 1996.
The eleventh on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list to be appointed as the Prime Minister of India was H.D.Deve Gowda beginning his term from 1st June 1996 to 21st April 1997 for a length of 324 days.
The twelfth Prime Minister to be appointed after Gowda was I.K.Gujral, who was an MP. He held his office from 21st April 1997 and continued to work till 19th March 1998 for 332 days.
The Tenth Prime Minister from the Indian Prime Ministers’ list was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who resumed the next office from 19th March 1999 to 22nd May 2004 for six years and 64 days.
The Thirteenth Prime Minister to rein India was Manmohan Singh, an Assam MP. He held the Office of the Prime Minister from 22nd May 2004 till 26th May 2014, which lasted for ten years and four days. He was the third Prime Minister to rule the country for the longest time.
The Fourteenth and the last on the Indian Prime Ministers’ list is Narendra Modi, the winner in Varanasi’s constituency, holding the office for the second term. He vowed first time on 26th May 2014 and is continuing still. For the first term, Pranab Mukherjee swore him as the Prime Minister of India, and Ramnath Kovind did the swearing-in for the second term.
