ENGLISH-TAUGHT PUBLIC STUDY

A first route to explore.

Can you study a Master's in Germany without German?

Yes, where an English-taught programme does not require German. You must still meet its academic requirements and provide accepted English evidence. For a German-taught degree, eligible applicants can start the offered preparation route without prior German skills. Learn online first, then continue in Germany after visa approval until you meet the university’s language requirements.

Read the course rules

English-taught Master's in Germany: admission requirements

A recognised bachelor’s degree is the starting point. The subject match, credits, grades and language evidence determine whether an application can be considered.

Relevant degree and modules

Compare your transcript with the required subject areas. Universities may specify credits in mathematics, programming, engineering, business or another field. Similar degree titles do not prove a match.

German grade 2.5 or better

A converted grade of 2.5 or better is a common threshold for selected international programmes. It is not a requirement for every English-taught master’s. Some courses set stricter grades or other assessment rules.

IELTS Academic 6.5 or equivalent

IELTS Academic 6.5 overall is a common requirement in selected programmes. Check component scores, accepted alternatives and certificate rules. Other courses require different scores or accept specific exemptions.

Course-specific documents

Some programmes request one or two letters of recommendation, a motivation letter, a CV, work evidence or a portfolio. Submit the documents and format required by that course.

Better academic results can strengthen a competitive application. On the German scale, a lower numerical grade is better: 1.5 is stronger than 2.5. Grades alone do not decide admission; subject fit and other selection criteria also matter.

Eligibility and selection are separate

NC and competition for German master’s programmes

Meeting the minimum entry conditions allows you to apply. It does not reserve a place in a programme with limited capacity.

What does NC mean?

NC stands for Numerus Clausus, meaning a limited number of places. When qualified applications exceed capacity, the university selects applicants under its published rules. Check selection criteria and deadlines for each course.
A non-NC programme still has academic and language requirements. An aptitude assessment or document review may also apply.

International classrooms and nationality

International programmes bring together students from different countries. Admission is governed by the specific programme’s regulations; there is no general rule reserving a Fixed number of Students From a particular country in a classroom.

German-taught Master's in Germany: start from level zero

No prior German skills are required to begin the offered language preparation route. Academic eligibility and later university and visa requirements remain separate.

Confirm the language pathway

Check the public university’s written acceptance of the language centre and the route. Review the intended master’s and any conditions before enrolment.

Begin online from home

Start from level zero with the language centre in Germany. Continue learning online while admission and visa applications are being processed.

Continue classes in Germany

Once your visa is issued and valid for travel, arrive on the agreed date. Enrol at the language school and continue attending classes in person.

Meet degree-language requirements

Continue towards the accepted C1-level certificate, TestDaF or DSH result. Completing a C1 class does not by itself prove that you meet the university’s requirement.

TestDaF and DSH: check the required result

TestDaF TDN 4 in all four components is the standard threshold for unrestricted language admission. DSH-2 is commonly required, but courses can set different levels. Confirm the exact evidence and when it must be submitted.

An online language start is a feature of this offered pathway. It does not waive visa language evidence or guarantee admission, visa approval or a fixed completion date.

Prepare for each application

Documents for your Master's in Germany

Use the institution’s current checklist. Requirements differ, even when courses share a similar name.

Academic documents

Degree certificate or accepted provisional evidence, transcripts, grading scale and module descriptions where requested. Provide translations or certified copies when required.

English or German evidence

Submit the test and scores accepted by your course. An English-medium bachelor’s degree does not automatically exempt you from a language test.

Recommendations and motivation

Prepare one or two LoRs where required. Explain your academic fit and reasons for choosing the course in an original motivation letter. Address it to the stated recipient—often the international admissions office or programme committee.

Additional evidence

A CV, relevant work certificates, portfolio, GRE/GMAT or other assessment may be requested. Indian applicants should check the applicable APS and dMAT procedure.

Indian qualifications · Current update

APS and dMAT for postgraduate applicants

Academic verification is separate from admission. Check the procedure that applies to your previous degree and intake.

For Summer Semester 2027 and later, APS India requires dMAT for affected previous-degree fields: engineering; commerce, accounting, finance and economics; and business or management. Transitional exemptions apply.

Affected applicants may submit complete APS documents before the dMAT certificate is available. APS can issue the certificate only after receiving and checking the required dMAT result. Use the official scope and exemption rules.

Compare fees and admission terms

Private universities for a Master's in Germany

Private study can offer another route when the course, entry conditions and budget fit your plans. A tuition fee does not remove academic standards.

Entry and application timing

Some private programmes have less restrictive grade thresholds, no NC or rolling applications. Processing may be quicker for a complete file, but there is no uniform admission time or guaranteed offer.

Subjects and recognition

Business administration and management are common areas to explore. Computing, software engineering, IT and other technical courses are also available. Verify the institution and degree recognition.

Degree length and prior learning

Selected programmes offer 60, 90 or 120 ECTS variants. Eligibility depends on previous academic credits and the course regulations. Relevant work experience may be required or considered, especially for an MBA.

Ask the institution to confirm the duration you qualify for, any bridging modules, and all tuition and additional charges. Work experience does not automatically replace missing academic credits.
