APS Full Form

APS Full Form: Meaning, Certificate and Application Process

The APS full form is Akademische Prüfstelle.

It is a German term. In English, it means Academic Evaluation Centre.

APS India checks the academic records of students who studied in India. It verifies whether the certificates are genuine. It also reviews whether the qualification qualifies for higher education in Germany.

Indian students applying to study in Germany generally need an APS certificate. It is also an important document for the German student visa process.

This page explains the APS meaning, purpose, requirements, fee, documents and application steps.

What Is the APS Full Form in Education?

The APS certificate full form is Akademische Prüfstelle Certificate.

The organisation is known in English as the Academic Evaluation Centre. APS India works under the Science Section of the German Embassy in New Delhi. It also cooperates with the German Academic Exchange Service, commonly known as DAAD.

APS India started its operations in 2022. It deals with qualifications issued by Indian educational institutions.

The applicant’s nationality is not the main deciding factor. The place where the academic qualification was issued matters more.

For example, a foreign national who completed a degree in India may also need APS verification.

What Is an APS Certificate?

An APS certificate confirms that your academic documents have been checked.

APS may verify documents such as:

  • Class 10& 12 certificates
  • Diploma / Degree certificates
  • University / Institution mark sheets
  • JEE results, where applicable
  • Other documents listed for your category

APS also checks your educational background against the rules used for admission to German higher education.

A successful applicant receives a digitally signed APS certificate by email. This PDF should be kept in its original form.

Do not edit, rename or merge the digital certificate with another PDF. Its digital signature must remain valid.

Why Is APS Required for Germany?

German universities receive applications from many education systems.

School boards, universities and grading methods differ from one country to another. German institutions need a reliable way to understand and verify these qualifications.

APS helps with this process.

The certificate shows that the submitted academic records have been reviewed. It can support both the university application and student visa process.

However, an APS certificate does not give you university admission. It also does not guarantee a German student visa.

The university makes the admission decision. The German Embassy or Consulate makes the visa decision.

Is APS Mandatory for Indian Students?

APS is required in most cases when a student has academic qualifications from India and plans to study in Germany.

You may need an APS certificate if you are applying for:

  • 2A bachelor’s degree
  • A master’s degree
  • A Studienkolleg or foundation pathway
  • A preparatory course linked to university studies
  • Certain university partnership programmes

The exact requirement depends on your qualification and study plan.

Applicants should use the official APS eligibility quiz before starting. They should then download the correct checklist for their academic category.

Who May Be Exempt from APS?

Some applicants may not require an APS certificate.

Possible APS exemptions include:

  • Students planning to pursue a PhD or postdoctoral project
  • Applicants funded through certain German or EU public scholarships
  • Students whose relevant qualification was not issued in India
  • Applicants holding an International Baccalaureate qualification
  • Students who will receive a non-German degree in Germany
  • Certain exchange or official partnership students

An exemption should not be assumed.

Always check the current rules before applying to a university or booking a visa appointment. German missions almost always ask for APS when the relevant school or university qualification was earned in India.

Different APS Application Categories
There is no single document list for every student.

APS India provides separate procedures based on the applicant’s educational background.

APS for Class 12 Students
This category is for students who have completed Class 12 in India.

The evaluation checks the school qualification and the possible route into German higher education.

Some students may need a Studienkolleg before starting a bachelor’s degree. The requirement depends on the school board, marks, subjects and current German admission rules.

APS for JEE Candidates
A separate checklist is available for students with JEE Main and Advanced results.

Submit JEE documents only when they apply to the student’s academic route.

APS for Undergraduate Students
Students who have completed at least two semesters of bachelor’s studies in India may fall under this procedure.

Their semester mark sheets and university records will normally form part of the application.

APS for Graduates and Postgraduates
This procedure is generally used by students with a completed bachelor’s or master’s degree.

It is commonly relevant to applicants seeking master’s admission in Germany.

Selected master’s applicants may also need a Digital Master Test, known as dMAT. The requirement depends on the previous field of study, intake and current APS rules.
APS Documents Required
The exact APS document list depends on your category. Therefore, download the latest checklist before preparing the file. Commonly requested documents may include:

  • Printed and signed APS application form
  • Recent passport-size photograph
  • Student Authorisation Letter
  • Copy of the passport
  • Aadhaar card copy
  • Class 10 mark sheet and certificate
  • Class 12 mark sheet and certificate
  • University semester mark sheets
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree certificate
  • Provisional degree certificate, if accepted
  • Academic transcripts
  • University enrolment proof
  • JEE documents, where relevant
  • APS fee payment proof
  • Language certificate, if submitted
  • dMAT certificate, where required

Submit clear A4-size colour copies. Copy both sides when a document has information on the back.

Do not send original certificates unless APS India asks for them.

Documents issued in English or in a bilingual format generally do not need notarisation. A notarised translation may be needed when a certificate is issued only in a regional language.

APS Fee for Germany

The published APS procedure fee for an individual application is ₹18,000.

The amount is non-refundable. This applies even if the applicant later withdraws or receives an unsuccessful result.

You can normally pay during online registration using the available payment method.

Always confirm the current APS fee in India on the official website before paying. Fees and payment instructions can change.

How to Apply for an APS Certificate
The APS application process can be broken down into a few simple steps.

Step 1: Check Your APS Category
Better visit the official APS India website and use the eligibility quiz if you are unsure about the correct procedure. Then choose the category that matches your latest completed academic stage.

Step 2: Download the Correct Checklist
Do not use a checklist prepared for another applicant.

A Class 12 student and a bachelor’s graduate will not have the same requirements.

Read every point carefully. Also download the mandatory Student Authorisation Letter.

Step 3: Register Online
Create an account on the APS India portal.

Enter your personal and academic details exactly as shown in your documents.

Even a small difference in your name, date or registration number may lead to further questions.

Step 4: Pay the APS Fee
Pay the stated verification fee through the approved payment option, and save the receipt or proof of payment.

Step 5: Prepare the Application File
Print and sign the application form.

Arrange all documents in the order given in the checklist. Make sure the copies are clear and complete.

Step 6: Send the Documents
APS documents must generally be sent by courier or post.

Personal submission is not available. Keep the courier receipt and tracking number safely.

Step 7: Wait for Verification
APS India may contact your school, board or university.

The institution may be asked to confirm your records. Quick replies from the institution can help avoid unnecessary delays.

Applicants should also monitor their registered email address.

Step 8: Receive the Digital APS Certificate
Successful applicants receive a digital APS certificate by email.

Keep the original PDF unchanged. You may need to submit it to a German university, uni-assist, VFS or the relevant visa section.

APS India confirms that its certificates are issued digitally and should remain unmodified standalone PDFs.
APS Processing Time

APS India does not promise completion within a fixed number of days.

The time taken can vary from one application to another.

Processing may depend on:

  • The number of applications
  • Whether the documents are complete
  • Replies from the school or university
  • The applicant’s academic background
  • Additional verification requirements
  • dMAT requirements, where applicable
  • Differences found in the submitted records

Apply early. Do not wait until a university or visa deadline is close.

At the same time, avoid applying with incomplete academic records. Use the procedure that matches your completed level of education.

What Is dMAT in the APS Process?
The dMAT form is Digital Master Test.

It is an additional requirement for selected master’s applicants in certain academic fields. It does not replace APS verification.

For affected applicants seeking the Summer Semester 2027 intake or a later intake, the dMAT certificate forms part of the APS documents.

Applicants who completed APS online registration before 29 June 2026 are exempt from this requirement. Those who sent their complete APS documents before that date are also exempt.

Students who have already received an APS certificate do not need dMAT for that completed procedure.

The dMAT rules apply only to selected applicants. Check the official APS India page before registering for the test.
Is TestAS Required for APS?
TestAS is not currently a general requirement for APS verification in India.

However, a German university may ask for TestAS as part of its own admission process.

APS rules and university admission rules are different. Check both separately.
Is IELTS or German Required for APS?
APS India does not set a general German or English language level for document verification.

Language ability is usually considered by:

  • The German university
  • The Studienkolleg
  • The course provider
  • The German visa section
If you submit an IELTS, TOEFL, or German certificate to APS, it may check its authenticity.

Still, an APS certificate does not confirm that your language level meets a university’s admission rules.
Does APS Guarantee Admission?
No.

APS verifies academic documents and reviews educational eligibility. It does not select students for German universities.

You must still meet the course requirements. These may include:

  • Academic marks
  • Required subjects
  • Language proficiency
  • Work experience
  • Entrance examinations
  • Portfolio requirements
  • Programme-specific conditions
The university makes the final decision.
Does APS Guarantee a German Student Visa?
No.

The APS certificate is normally an important visa document. However, it is only one part of the application.

The visa section may also review:

  • University admission
  • Proof of funds
  • Language ability
  • Academic plans
  • Health insurance
  • Personal documents
  • Previous education
  • The purpose of study
A valid APS certificate does not automatically result in visa approval.
Common APS Application Mistakes
Many delays begin with small errors.

Choosing the Wrong Procedure
Select the category based on your actual academic background.

Do not choose a Class 12 procedure when your planned route requires completed university studies.

Sending an Incomplete File
Missing even one required document can affect the process.

Use the latest checklist. Tick each item only after you have included it in the application.

Entering Different Information
Names, dates, marks and registration numbers must match the certificates.

Explain any genuine difference with suitable supporting documents.

Sending Poor Copies
Blurred, dark or cropped copies are difficult to verify.

Use clear colour copies on A4 paper.

Sending Original Documents
APS India normally asks for copies.

Do not send original certificates unless you receive a specific request.

Ignoring University Recognition
Graduates should check the recognition status of their institution and qualification in the anabin database.

A dMAT result cannot correct a recognition problem.

Applying Too Late
APS verification can take time.

Start early enough to protect your university and visa schedule.
