What Is Germany VFS?
Germany VFS refers to the visa services VFS Global offers for Germany.
VFS Global is the official service partner of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in India.
Its services may include:
- Managing Germany visa appointments
- Receiving visa applications
- Checking documents at the counter
- Collecting fingerprints and photographs
- Collecting visa and service fees
- Sending applications to the German mission
- Returning passports after a decision
VFS acts as a link between the applicant and the German mission.
It cannot influence the result of a visa application. Paying for an optional VFS service will not improve the chance of visa approval.
Who Needs to Use VFS Germany in India?
- Many Indian residents submit their German visa applications through a VFS Germany application centre.
- The process depends on the visa category.
- Students, tourists, business visitors, employees and family members may use different appointment categories.
- Applicants must choose the correct category while booking. An application may not be accepted if the appointment was booked under the wrong category.
Types of Germany Visas Handled Through VFS
Germany visas fall mainly into two groups.
Germany Schengen Visa
A Schengen visa is generally used for a stay of up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
It may cover:
- Tourism
- Family visits
- Business visits
- Trade fairs
- Short training programmes
- Short academic visits
Applicants can normally submit a German Schengen visa application at any open Germany VFS centre in India.
This facility applies regardless of the applicant’s place of residence. However, it does not apply in the same way to national visa applications.
German National Visa
A German national visa is also called a long-stay visa or D visa.
You need it when your planned stay is longer than 90 days.
Common national visa categories include:

- Family reunion visa

National visa applicants must select the German mission responsible for their place of residence.

Germany VFS Student Visa Process
- Most Indian students applying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree use the Germany VFS student visa route.
- The current process may begin through the German Consular Services Portal.
- Applicants complete the online questions and upload the requested documents. The portal places the application under the correct student visa subcategory.
- The uploaded documents undergo a preliminary review. The applicant will later receive instructions about the physical appointment.
- At the appointment, the applicant may need to present original documents. Also submit any required copies, provide fingerprints, submit biometric photographs, pay the applicable charges or answer questions about the study plan.
- The German mission may request further documents after submission.
How to Apply for a Germany Visa Through VFS
Step 1: Identify the Correct Visa Category
- Start by deciding the purpose of your visit.
- A student should not book a tourist visa appointment. Similarly, a person taking up full-time employment should not select a business visitor category.
- Choosing the wrong category can delay the process.
Step 2: Check the Official Requirements
- Visit the official Germany VFS website and the German Missions in India website.
- Read the checklist for your visa type.
- Visa requirements can change. Therefore, use the latest checklist available on the date of application.
Step 3: Complete the Online Application
- Most German national visa applications can now begin through the Consular Services Portal.
- The portal asks questions about your purpose of travel. Your answers determine the visa subcategory.
- Answer every question carefully.
- If the information does not match your actual situation, you may be asked to delete the application and begin again.
Step 4: Upload Your Documents
- Scan each document clearly.
- The complete page must be visible. Avoid dark images, cut edges and unreadable text.
- Use the correct document section when uploading each file.
Step 5: Book the Germany VFS Appointment
- Follow the instructions provided for your visa category.
- The Germany VFS appointment system may show available dates or a waiting list.
- Book one appointment for each applicant. Even a child needs a separate visa application and appointment.
- For some categories, new places are released gradually. Applicants on a waiting list may receive an email when an appointment becomes available.
Step 6: Attend the Visa Application Centre
- Arrive at the Germany VFS centre before the reporting time.
- Carry the appointment confirmation, passport and required documents.
- Bring originals when the checklist asks for them. Long-stay visa applicants generally need original documents or copies certified by a German authority.
Step 7: Complete Biometric Submission
- Applicants may need to provide fingerprints and a digital photograph.
- Biometric submission is a normal part of the visa process.

Step 8: Wait for the Visa Decision
- VFS forwards the file to the responsible German mission. The Embassy or Consulate then examines the application.

- Submitting all documents does not guarantee approval. Every application is assessed separately.
Step 9: Collect Your Passport
You will receive information when your passport is ready.
Depending on the service selected, you may collect it from the centre or receive it by courier.
Check the visa label immediately after receiving your passport.

- Name is correct
- Passport number is correct

- Validity dates are correct
- Number of entries is correct

- A passport used for the online application should have been issued within the previous ten years. It should also contain at least two empty visa pages.
APS Certificate for Germany VFS Student Visa
